Hospitals in multiple states have treated close to a thousand people suffering from extreme diarrhea caused by a dangerous parasite. Health authorities have now recorded nearly two thousand infections spanning dozens of regions.
Symptoms appear suddenly, with abdominal cramps and explosive diarrhea starting within hours. Some victims become too weak and end up in hospitals needing immediate IV fluids.
Experts strongly warn the public to wash fresh produce thoroughly before consuming. Local water supplies in some areas may also pose a risk. Anyone experiencing rectal bleeding or a fever lasting over a day should get checked immediately.
The parasite, Cyclospora cayetanensis, spreads exclusively via tainted produce. So far, the origin has been identified by investigators.
