The largest Cook Islands island is volcanic, featuring Te Manga peak as a landmark, and it saw HMS Bounty mutineers in 1789, before missionary activity helped shape its political order. It remains the Cook Islands’ most populous island, noted for ariki leadership and widespread Christian conversion.
