Latest News About Regulators ok Reflect Orbital trial for emergency zones

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission has approved a test launch of a Reflect Orbital satellite. The California-based project intends to reflect sunlight onto Earth at night during darkness, creating artificial daylight for rescue crews. The goal is to brighten emergency blackout zones or nighttime military operations or other night‑time tasks. Regulators alerted that the test could interfere with other satellites including weather satellites and threaten the environment and wildlife. The U.S. agency is slated for launch in 2027 for a first in-orbit tryout of the technology that promises new lighting solutions.
