Labour MP Shabana Mahmood has unveiled a proposal for a new asylum route mirroring Canada’s approach.
It would let businesses, universities and community groups sponsor refugees, providing them with housing and employment support.
The objective is to hasten settlement and ease the strain on the current framework.
Mahmood says the route might admit thousands of newcomers, akin to last year’s Ukrainian programme.
Critics warn the plan may burden public services.
The government has yet to set a timetable.
